A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER
My name is Ethiopia Begashaw, and I started Maraki in November 2023 in Brooklyn, New York. Maraki began with a very personal desire: to design pieces that move with you through your day, functional, elegant, and adaptable. A piece that could be dressed up or down, that could accompany you to work, to dinner, on a plane, or on a walk around the city. That desire evolved into a brand rooted in soft mobility, slow craft, and an honest commitment to sustainability, ethics, and community.
My purpose with Maraki goes deeper than making beautiful objects. I hope to help people make choices they feel right about, choices grounded in transparency, in awareness and in respect for the artisans who bring these pieces to life. I want to shed light on the leather industry, to bring intention back to design and production, and to show that luxury can be gentle, responsible, and deeply human.
Each bag is handcrafted by Ethiopian women artisans and showcases the rich culture and exceptional craftsmanship of my homeland, Ethiopia. The name of each bag is derived from the Amharic language, they each hold a special significance and story and reflect the tranquility and balance I discovered within myself and and now strive to share through every piece we create.
As we grow, I hope to share our expertise in craftsmanship and leather innovation while spotlighting the extraordinary talent of Ethiopian and African makers on a global scale.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being part of this journey. Your support makes it possible for us to build a brand rooted in intention, beauty, and community.
Warmly,
Ethiopia
