SUSTAINABILITY
MANUFACTURE & CRAFTSPEOPLE
MARAKI’s bags and accessories are skillfully handmade in Ethiopia by a group of artisans and craftsman who work according to the rules of craft leather-ware since 1996, and offers you with the new collection, staple, timeless products that stand the test of time.
For us, sustainability starts with honoring the people behind the work. We produce intentionally and in small batches, creating only what our community asks for. This allows us to minimize waste while supporting fair, steady employment for our artisans.
Our commitment to a more sustainable future is an ongoing practice. We’re constantly learning, refining, and exploring how to do better—whether that’s through improving our supply chain, reducing waste, or using resources and technology more mindfully. Transparency sits at the heart of this process so you always know exactly what you’re investing in.
MATERIALS
MARAKI has chosen leather as base material for all of its collections. A noble and qualitative natural material, living through time and fashion. A well-made leather bag lasts years, often decades, which makes it one of the most sustainable choices when cared for thoughtfully.
All MARAKI leathers are sourced, prepared, and tanned in Addis Ababa. We work exclusively with full-grain Ethiopian cowhide, calfskin, and sheepskin, materials known for their durability and beautiful character. As with any natural material, slight variations in tone or texture may occur; we see these as part of the story of each piece.
CARE
Your MARAKI bag is designed to be worn, loved, and lived with for years. To keep it looking and performing its best:
- Our leathers are treated for resistance to water and stains, but conditioning them occasionally will help maintain their texture and richness.
- Avoid alcohol- or chemical-based stain removers, which can compromise the leather.
- Try to prevent prolonged exposure to water, humidity or abrasive surfaces.
- When resting your bag, gently stuff it to maintain its shape and store it in its dust bag.
Leather is a natural material, and subtle changes over time are normal—they’re part of its evolution.
PACKAGING & TRANSPORT
We keep our packaging minimal and purposeful. Everything protecting your MARAKI piece during transit is 100% recyclable, and we consciously avoid unnecessary plastics or excess tissue. Less waste, less impact.
